ARSHAD ALAM RECORDS FINE TREBLE

The talented Arshad Alam cornered glory on the penultimate day of the winter season, recording a fine treble through Harley Quinn and Opening Act from the stables of Azhar Ali and the well backed Blue Blazer from trainer Imtiaz Khan's yard.

After her smashing victory in her last essay, Harley Quinn was fancied most by the stable connections despite the heavy penalty she was asked to shoulder in the Malpe Trophy run over a sprint. But the in-form Azhar Ali ward successfully managed to defy the handicap, edging out Noahs Ark in a thriller. The Inayathullah schooled Mint shared the favouritism with Harley Quinn before the dozen runners came under the starter's flag, but she could only finish third.

Blue Blazer who failed to earn his cornbill last time thanks to the injudicious effort of jockey Pradeep Chouhan was backed to the exclusion of his 11 rivals in the upper division of the Masters Key Plate and he made no mistake romping home in style. Del Porto did well to gain the runner-up spot ahead of the old at tooth Freenemee, while Iron Man took the fourth spot. The winner, it appears is in the best of health and it will pay to follow him again early in the summer season.

Astride the second in demand at the betting ring, Opening Act in the lower division of the event, Arshad packed punch on the Azhar Ali ward to take command at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Tarini from Satish Narredu's yard finished on purposefully at end to nose out Birchwood, who in his effort to make every post a winning one went out of gas in the final furlong but yet managed to save place money.

Satish Narredu, earlier led in Kingsfield who made a heartwarming debut in the Becket Plate. The winner, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring hit the front soon after the 12 juveniles came under the starter'ss flag and was never headed, increasing his margin of victory in the final furlong. Keevah, another debutant finished a game second ahead of Spiritous while Tiger Returns from Arjun Manglorkar's yard, who was also strongly fancied in this event despite the bad draw (12) returned home a none-too-impressive fourth.

The Inayathullah-trained Tea Wid Me, who performed like a dud in her last essay last week, appeared to have sprouted wings and in exactly a week's time produced a sublime effort to floor all her nine rivals in the upper division of the Irupu Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs.Tea Wid Me over an identical distance last Wednesday finished more than 11 lengths behind Bellerophon and this Wednesday she streamrolled the opposition to win by more than five lengths in the hands of T S Jodha. The vastly improved performance in just a week calls for an explanation, but the stewards and stipes at this centre are more interested promoting their candidates for the forthcoming elections and  keeping away a seasoned and senior race correspondent without a charge or a caution. The improved performance of Tea Wid Me calls for an enquiry and explanation. The hopefully the stipes and stewards will take a serious view of the many blow-hot, blow-cold cases in their effort to gain the confidence of the poor punters who are floored by the sudden change in form made a mockery of the book of form. The on-money favourite Purity, who was not favourably placed at the top of the straight started galloping only after Tea Wid Me and her owner were sipping a cup of tea after stunning one and all.

Pinyada helped Inayathullah record a double, winning the RCTC Cup in the hands of leading pro Srinath. The favourite travelled nice and easy all through the seven furlongs trip before Srinath reminded the public choice of the task ahead and the Inayathullah ward responded gamely to score in convincing fashion from arch rival Rum Runner and Mickey Mouse.

After a while trainer Mahesh struck it rich in the Magod Falls Plate run over a mile. Good Time Indeed fancied quietly by the insiders and right connections donkey-licked her 11 rivals while providing jockey Jagadeesh an easy victory. So Mi Dar and Dynamism garnered maximum support in this event. While Dynamism finished second, So Mi Dar, who was ineptly piloted by Shailesh Shinde finished fourth behind Scarlet Princess.

HARTNELL LIFTS CALCUTTA ST LEGER

Rutherford Alford-trained Hartnell proved beyond doubt that he is no mean stayer as he lifted the season’s last and longest classic – The Calcutta St Leger – with a degree of comfort, thanks to an intelligent piece of horsemanship by the vastly experienced YS Srinath. Gradually moving up the son of Western Aristocrat (out of Mother’s Pride) from the rear of the seven-horse field, Srinath gave his rivals the slip just after the turning for home, to win eventually by just over a length. In contrast, his nearest rival Alldero (Dashrath Singh up) was ridden in a haphazardly manner and paid the penalty. To make matters worse, the colt dropped his bit between the 1200m and 1000m markers and lost position drastically. Rather ironically, it was his giant stablemate Shohin who took the box seat behind pace-setter Panchovilla from the 1600m marker, which contributed partly to Alldero’s debacle. Dashrath was committed to the rails and could not extricate himself until it was too late. Having said that, all due credit must be given to Hartnell’s mentor who paraded him in the paddock in tip-top condition. His confidence in his ward was reflected on the odds board as it closed as the 18/10 favourite. Kudos to young Rutherford for delivering the goods with such confidence!

That rating is not a criteria in such races was proved by the filly Very Special who ended up a good third despite being rated the lowest at 43. Her breeding (China Visit-Star Supremacy) was the reason that she performed so admirably over an extended trip of 2800 metres. Her dam line (Razeen-Gourgandine) has an abundance of staying blood and this became evident as the race progressed..

Rutherford had earlier led in Sheer Force (Net Whizz-Celtic Manor) who made every post of the Regal Connection Cup a winning one in the hands of Srinath. The colt, who closed as the favourite,  had to be hard ridden in the final furlong to keep Coup De Grace at bay. Both of Rutherford’s winners are owned by Suchit Jayraj Shah.

The afternoon commenced with Shezad Khan riding an absolute blinder atop Bath-trained Glorious Run (Rebuttal-Beautiful Crown/ Hazara Stud). Available at 10/1, the gelding was held back for most part along the rails before being switched to the outside in the straight and forged a difficult passage through a packed field to get the better of Everglow who was in a clear position to pocket the race. City Heights finished on well to occupy the runner-up berth.

The two divisions of the Robin Hood Handicap were no-whips races. The withdrawal of Born To Win cleared the way for a duel between Amaranthus and Carpe Noctem.  However, as the gates opened, it became evident that it was going to be a one-horse race as Carpe Noctem (Surfrider-Princess Helen) shot out of the gates like a scalded cat to give apprentice Vikram an armchair ride. The lower division belonged to Vikash Jaiswal’s Dancing Prince (Ace-Dancing Greens) who closed as the favourite and made every post a winning one in the hands of PS Chouhan.

The race for The Royal Blue Handicap saw One Man Army set a scorching pace which threw favourite Arakawah out  of gear. It was left to James Mc Keown-trained Nobu (Burden Of Proof-Soviet Lake/ Kunigal Stud) to collar the front-runner, aided by some hrd riding from Trevor in the saddle. James Mc Keown brought the curtain down with a hard earned victory. His ward Rustler was ridden with great vigour by Dashrath to land the spoils. However, the race would have been undoubtedly won by Demonstrate with a reliable full-jockey to guide him. What was the necessity to declare a whip-less apprentice on  a bottom-weight who has been responding impressively to the stick ? More so, since the trip was merely six furlongs, which can be considered a trifle short for him. It was a technical error and the connections paid for it.

POSEIDON WINS GOVERNOR'S TROPHY IN STYLE

After a very long time, Lokanath Gowda led in a big winner, Poseidon from his yard coming up tops in the Governor's Trophy run over a mile. In the absence of Sir Cecil who opted out suffering from a ear injury and a couple waiting to start their campaigns in summer, a moderate field came under the starter's flag, Summer Palace from Irfan Ghatala's yard garnering the maximum support on the strength of his impressive debut. The favourite piloted by leading pro Trevor Patel did produce his best but that was just not good enough to stop Posiedon and Jagadeesh from galloping home to the delight of Lokanath. Velocidad finished a tame third and hopefully will turn a new leaf in summer.

On form the Irfan Ghatala-trained Automatic looked outstanding in the Leading Stud Cup. His sublime effort behind Mauritania in the Guineas and the fact that he looked a picture of fitness at the paddock saw most big bettors double their bet on the top fancy, but the public rage after streaking ahead past the distance post lost in the last stride to St.Pauli's Girl partnered by Trevor Patel. Suraj Narredu astride the favourite took it easy soon after he grabbed the lead and was caught napping in the end by Trevor. Aaron The Baron finished third.

Neil Darashah schooled Royal Sceptre made every post a winning one in the Leading Owner Trophy. The nine-furlong trip suited Royal Sceptre who too had his fair share of followers. A confident Arshad Alam pushed his mount ahead soon after the start and never let the initiative slip. Sagrada did well to gain the runner-up spot ahead of Fabulous while the favourite Dr.Logan another favourite from Irfan's yard bit the dust. Padmanabhan-trained Volatility had it easy in the Leading Tipster Cup. Backed to the exclusion of all her rivals, the daughter of China Visit cantered home without unduly extending herself. Volatility is now at her best and it will pay to follow her early summer.

It was good to see Praveen Jesu lead in Back of Beyond in the Champion Trainer Trophy. The winner after a ding-dong battle edged out the favourite Reference close home in the mile long event. Apprentice Nazr-ul-Alam again sent out a message that he has the skills to climb up the ladder. Fresh Start at one stage looked good to contest the issue but had to rest content with the third spot. Srinath drove the well fancied Allsettogo for an easy win in the upper division of the Champion Jockey Trophy. Land Of Liberty attracted solid support in this event, backed down from (5/1) to (2/1), but after taking command at the top of the straight, Land Of Liberty failed to match strides with the winner who proved too good at end.

Many top pros wanted to see Classic Cut in action. And the Irfan ward didn't disappoint though he looked gross in the parade ring. Jockey Trevor Patel who rates Classic Cut high was provided an arm-chair ride to success by the shortest priced favourite who will make his mark in the summer season.

Inayathulla schooled Quick Action rightly opened the favourite after a couple of pleasing performances on the trial track but soon the odds drifted out and the winner was available at (4/1), but that didn't stop T S Jodha from packing a punch on the Inayathullah ward who romped home ahead Zala Princess.

SELFIE STAR BAGS RADHA SIGTIA TROPHY

After a lull in the classics, Selfie Star (Excellent Art – Maharanee, Exhilaration Stud) returned to winning ways notching up her fourth career victory back in handicap races in class II. David Allan hit the front with Selfie Star and showed no hurry, settling down to a very comfortable initial pace. Multiglory followed a couple of lengths behind in second, with Drogo and Uncle Scrooge bringing up the rear.

Multiglory shot past Selfie Star in the back stretch and led the four horse field all the way into the straight. Selfie Star soon wrested back the lead and stormed ahead galloping at full steam. None of the three rivals could catch up with Selfie Star and the Dallas Todywalla ward galloped on to win by just over a length. Sandesh, astride Uncle Scrooge, would have done better if he had started his finishing gallop a few meters earlier. He seemed in no hurry even as Selfie Star had gone into the lead and was going all out. Sandesh waited a tad too long before pushing his mount forward and then again tapped the whip only a couple of times even though Uncle Scrooge was gaining on the leader. On hindsight, had Sandesh opened throttle on Uncle Scrooge and used the whip judiciously, the verdict would have been closer. The followers of the favourite would have vented a sigh of relief as Selfie Star zipped past the winning post.

Forest Fairy (Arazan – Forest Fantasy, Poonawalla Stud) also scored an easy win beating Star of Thea, stretching away in the final 100 meters. Star of Thea, attempting a third straight win, was off on a start to finish mission. Forest Fairy settled in second with the rest following close behind. Glyndebourne was withdrawn at the gates, taking the sheen off, of what could have been a much keener tussle. That was not to be, hence Forest Fairy didn’t have to be extended while easily getting past of leader Star of Thea midway up the straight and then quickening well to steer clear, winning by two lengths without actually needing to fire on all cylinders, jockey Trevor doing just what was required and nothing more.

Trevor then partnered Imtiaz Sait’s Harmony of the Sea (Multidimensional – Sea Value, Mehra Stud) to time to score her second career win from only six starts. Trevor was at his scintillating best as he timed his finish to perfection.

Collegium grabbed the lead soon on turning for home and worked his way up nicely shapping well for the final run. Soon Arc Shine came up with a worthy challenge, coming alongside Collegium and the two were going hard at it. Harmony of the Sea improved well and began to quicken in the final furlong. Trevor got the filly going and Harmony of the Sea began to devour ground at a brisk pace. Arc Shine had barely gone past Collegium when Harmony of the Sea thundered along to pip Arc Shine on the post in a thrilling finish.

Harrier disappointed, was never prominent and only managed to come late on the scene to finish a tame face-saving fourth. Angels Touch improved considerably to finish one off the frame, but had to be whipped and pushed vigorously to regroup from the last spot at the turn to gain in position through the straight.

Jockey Dashrath Singh scored a back-to-back double both at nourishing odds. He first won with a late finish atop Sir Song (Hymn – Vicereen, Jai Govind Stud) after gracing the tail end of the field at the start and then improving past the 800m to make a good final run to get the nod right at the wire.

Deccan King led them into the straight with Commandperformance alongside, the latter bowing out of contention pretty soon. Cupido moved between horses to challenge for the lead and in the final furlong a bunch of horses were scrambling on to make the finish exciting.

Cupido got the measure of Deccan King and was fighting hard to stay in the lead. Sir Song arrived with a late burst and fought stride for stride with Cupido, gaining on the latter with every stride.  At the wire, Sir Song stretched his head in front and snatched a thrilling win. Aloha arrived with a fast gallop and did well to end a close third.

Dashrath then partnered Huzzah’s Grace (Chevalier – Radical Velocity, Ruia Stud) to carve out another victory in a similar fashion. He was a tad fortunate though as apprentice jockey Zeeshan astride Angel’s Harmony faltered at the last stride buckling and losing balance which may have cost him the race.

Angel’s Harmony switched lanes in the straight and made a forward dash with about 400 to go and shaped like a winner with those close behind not making much progress. Dashrath got Huzzah’s Grace going in the final furlong and started to close in on the leader at a good clip. Angels Harmony was still slightly ahead approaching the finish when Zeeshan seemed to have been caught off balance for that one stride which was enough for Huzzah’s Grace to speed ahead and clinch the race. Master Sergeant did well to finish in the money.

Pricelessgirl (Noverre – A Girl, Sohna Stud) trained by C Rajendra was ably ridden by apprentice jockey SA Amit to a fluent start to finish victory, her second this season and third overall. Getting out of the gates quickest, Pricelessgirl showed a lot of speed while leading them into the straight.

Once into the homestretch, SA Amit had Pricelessgirl racing further ahead not hurrying the filly too much and ensuring that she sustained all the way. He just nudged her a couple of times and was more hands and heels all through to keep her going. Pricelessgirl won with a healthy margin and was impressive all through. Adeline ran on to take the runner up berth ahead of Charging Tigress.

Mansoor Shah trained Fine Tune (Mull of Kintyre – Farmers Swing,  Sohna Stud)has struck good form and scored another fighting win – his second this season. It was not all that easy though as El tycoon nearly pulled it off.

El Tycoon led them into the straight and galloped on gamely right through into the final furlong. Fine Tune, who was never too far away from the leader, started to accelerate well at the business end. Apprentice jockey Zeeshan had her finish on fast and challenged El Tycoon closer home. They fought hard and eventually Fine Tune got the better of El Tycoon winning it by a head verdict.

For the professionals, trainer Imtiaz Sait saddled a double, while jockeys P Trevor and Dashrath Singh scored a double each.
